The laboratory preparation of a semen specimen and the subsequent placement into the uterus is intended to increase the numbers of motile sperm with normal morphology that will be in the vicinity of an oocyte at the site of fertilization in the fallopian tube. The timing of this maneuver is of critical importance. Intrauterine inseminations can also be performed in conjunction with fertility-drug treatments that may assist with ovulation. These fertility medications may be taken in an oral (e.g., Clomid) or injectable (e.g., Follistim, Gonal-F, Luveris) form. Also see information sheet on Ovulation Drugs from ASRM.
