Semen Analysis

The inability to conceive can be due to factors associated with the wife, the husband or, sometimes, due to a problem on both sides. One way to evaluate the reproductive function of the husband is to perform a semen analysis. The average man makes 3 billion sperm in a month. Three billion sperm seems like an astonishingly large number. This number is even more impressive when compared with the single egg proffered by the human ovary each month. The human male has a notable disregard for “quality control” with respect to sperm assembly. In a normal man, less than half of the sperm (~40%) will have good motility and more than 85% will have abnormal shapes (morphology).

Sperm with poor motility are unlikely to reach the site of fertilization and the egg generally shuns those with serious defects in shape. In most instances of low sperm count, motility or shapes, there are no reliable pharmaceutical or surgical remedy that will restore these parameters to normal. See information sheet on Diagnosting Testing of the Male from ASRM.

When providing a sample for a semen analysis, certain precautions should be taken to ensure an accurate analysis. The sperm sample should be collected only in a non-toxic laboratory-provided container, kept at body temperature and be delivered to the laboratory within one hour of collection. Specific collection instructions are provided by our office to ensure the best possible sample for testing.
